The statement below is issued by the American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Physicians and American Psychiatric Association:

Our organizations, representing nearly 600,000 physicians and medical students, firmly believe the trusted relationship between a physician and their patient should never be jeopardized by the actions of policymakers, that physicians should not be criminalized or penalized for providing care and that medical standards of care and physician education training and education must remain evidence-based and free from political interference.

Our organizations have consistently opposed any legislation, regulation or executive action that interferes in the confidential relationship between a patient and their physician or undermines the provision of evidence-based standards of patient care and physician training and education. Patients must be able to discuss health issues with their trusted physician to determine together what care is best for them.

We reiterate that all patients must have access to evidence-based, comprehensive medical care, and that physicians must be able to practice medicine that is informed by their education, training, and experience without threat of criminalization. Politics should not get in the way of evidence-based care and a strong patient-physician relationship. We support our members and will continue to advocate for access to the full spectrum of evidence-based health care and medical education.

CHICAGO—The Defense Health Agency (DHA) has recognized the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) as a physician certifying organization meeting the criteria outlined in the Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025.

Through its 16 specialty certifying boards, AOA Board Certification serves as an important quality marker for patients, employers, insurers and regulators. In addition to ensuring advancement of clinical knowledge and skills, the designation affirms a physician’s commitment to the osteopathic philosophy of whole-person care.

As a joint, integrated combat support agency, the DHA enables the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force medical services to provide a medically ready force in both peacetime and wartime. To ensure that specialty care provided to U.S. military personnel and veterans meets high standards for quality and safety, the DHA established the following criteria for physician certifying organizations:

  • Maintain a process to define, periodically review, enforce and update specific standards regarding knowledge and skills of the specialty or subspecialty.
  • Administer a psychometrically valid assessment to determine whether a physician meets standards for initial certification, recertification or continuing certification.
  • Establish and enforce a code of professional conduct.
  • Require that a physician satisfy the certifying body’s requirements for initial certification and any applicable recertification or continuing certification requirements of the certifying body that granted the initial certification.

For more than 80 years, AOA Board Certification has served as a trusted indicator of clinical excellence and commitment to the osteopathic philosophy of medicine. “AOA Board Certification has always upheld strenuous standards with the knowledge that prioritizing the health and well-being of patients is the ultimate goal,” said Carolyn Quist, DO, chair of the AOA’s Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists. “On behalf of all our boards, I express sincere appreciation for this recognition by the Defense Health Agency.”

The AOA’s Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists oversees the administration of initial board certification and osteopathic continuous certification for 16 specialty certifying boards, including 27 primary specialties and 48 subspecialties. Learn more at certification.osteopathic.org.

CHICAGO—Breaking a new record for osteopathic residency placements on Match Day, a total of 8,049 osteopathic (DO) medical students and graduates matched into postgraduate year one (PGY-1) training programs today through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Match. This all-time high total reflects a 92.6% match rate for the 8,392 DO seniors who participated, an increase of .3% from 2024. DO candidates matched into a wide spectrum of residency programs spanning 40 specialties, demonstrating the strong value that osteopathic physicians contribute across all areas of medicine.

Candidates who do not secure a residency position through the NRMP Match have the option to participate in the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP), through which programs offer unfilled positions to eligible unmatched or partially matched applicants. In addition, a small number of medical students and graduates were previously placed into programs through smaller matches, including the Urology Match and the San Francisco Match. Final placement numbers will be available in May. In 2024, DO seniors achieved the highest final placement rate of all applicant types, including MDs and international medical graduates.

“We are ecstatic to see that our osteopathic medical students and graduates are being actively sought out by residency programs in every specialty across the practice of medicine,” said AOA President Teresa A. Hubka, DO, FACOOG (Dist.), CS, who has practiced as an osteopathic OB-GYN for more than three decades. “Their success is a testament to the remarkable quality of our osteopathic education and training, and the distinctive skills and philosophy we bring to patient care.”

DOs spanning specialties

Reflecting the profession’s strong commitment to producing frontline physicians focused on providing care for underserved populations, a total of 4,098 DO seniors matched into primary care programs, including family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics. The remaining 3,675 osteopathic medical students matched into placements across a broad range of specialties, demonstrating the continued expansion of osteopathic medicine across every facet of medical practice.

DO seniors represent more than one third of the total-filled PGY-1 positions in the following specialties: physical medicine and rehabilitation, emergency medicine and family medicine. In addition, DO seniors matched into 20% of PGY-1 positions in psychiatry, pediatrics (categorical), transitional (PGY-1 only) and OB-GYN.

“With a strong focus on providing comprehensive frontline care, this next generation of DO residents will play a critical role in helping to address the projected physician shortage expected to severely impact our nation’s health care infrastructure over the next decade,” said AOA CEO Kathleen S. Creason, MBA. “We could not be prouder of all they’ve achieved and have no doubt they will make a tremendous impact on the future of medicine.”

Both DOs and MDs complete four years of medical school, followed by residency training focused on a specialized area of medicine. DOs receive additional training in the body’s musculoskeletal system and approach the practice of medicine using a philosophy focused on whole-person care.

Top-matched specialties

The following list outlines the top 15 specialties matched into by DO seniors:

  1. Internal medicine (categorical)
  2. Family medicine
  3. Emergency medicine
  4. Pediatrics (categorical)
  5. Psychiatry
  6. Anesthesiology (PGY-1 and PGY-2)
  7. Transitional year
  8. OB-GYN
  9. Surgery (categorical)
  10. Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PGY-1 and PGY-2)
  11. Diagnostic radiology (PGY-1 and PGY-2)
  12. Neurology (PGY-1 and PGY-2)

In response to growing concerns over vaccine misinformation, declining public trust in science and recent outbreaks of preventable diseases, a coalition of 34 scientific and medical organizations, led by the American Association of Immunologists (AAI) and the American College of Physicians (ACP), has issued a unified statement emphasizing the critical role of vaccinations in public health.

“We strongly support vaccination as a cornerstone of public health, a shining example of the power of scientific research and a vital tool in the fight against preventable diseases,” the statement asserts. “We urge everyone to adhere to recommended vaccination schedules to protect themselves, their families and their communities.”

AAI President Stephen C. Jameson said: “Vaccines are one of the greatest achievements of biomedical research, made possible by decades of rigorous scientific investigation and investment in discovery. The development of safe and effective vaccines requires a strong, well-funded scientific enterprise, from basic immunology research to large-scale clinical trials. Ensuring continued support for science is essential to protecting public health and combating emerging infectious diseases.”

ACP President Isaac O. Opole, added: “As internal medicine physicians on the front lines of patient care, we understand what needs to be done to mitigate the spread of preventable diseases. Vaccines are safe, effective and vital to our ability to prevent diseases that threaten public health. ACP remains concerned about the spread of disinformation and misinformation regarding vaccination and treatment and strongly supports evidence-based guidance. With the current measles outbreak and the threat of other preventable infectious diseases, we need to ensure that members of the public have reliable, accurate information to guide their choices.”

This unified statement from leading science and medical organizations comes against a backdrop of declining trust in science, rising vaccine misinformation and outbreaks of preventable infectious diseases.

Recent studies have highlighted a worrisome decline in public confidence toward scientific institutions. A Pew Research Center survey revealed that the percentage of Americans who believe science has a mostly positive effect on society dropped from 73% in 2019 to 57% in 2023 Furthermore, a study by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health found that misinformation about vaccines on social media contributes to vaccine hesitancy.

The tangible consequences of declining vaccination rates are evident. An ongoing measles outbreak in Texas has already resulted in over 300 cases and the tragic death of an unvaccinated child—the first such death in the U.S. in a decade.

The coalition’s statement underscores the extensive scientific foundation and rigorous safety protocols behind vaccine development. It highlights that decades of research and multiple phases of clinical trials ensure vaccine safety and efficacy. The statement also notes that while no medical intervention is without risk, the benefits of vaccination in preventing serious illness and death far outweigh any risk associated with vaccines.

In light of the current climate, the coalition calls upon individuals to consult with trusted health care professionals regarding any concerns about vaccines and to rely on credible, science-based information when making health decisions.

A full copy of the statement is available on the AAI website.

The statement below is issued by the American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Physicians and American Psychiatric Association:

“The removal of datasets and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) websites to comply with the President’s recent executive order puts the health and wellbeing of patients at risk and makes it more difficult for physicians to provide quality care.

The research, data and guidance on these webpages are widely used by the more than 600,000 physicians our organizations represent. Removal hamstrings our ability to provide factual, accurate information to the millions of patients our members serve. These resources are not just academic references – they are vital for real-time clinical decision-making in hospitals, clinics and emergency departments across the country.

Restricting access to these webpages leaves physicians, scientists and other members of the health care community without up-to-date recommendations on managing infectious diseases, public health threats, essential preventive care and chronic conditions.

Restoring these guidance pages is a public health imperative. At a time when emerging infectious diseases, antibiotic-resistant infections and evolving treatment protocols require rapid dissemination of knowledge, the removal of these resources place undue burdens on physicians and endangers patients.

We urge Congress to ensure that the CDC, NIH and other public health agencies have the resources and ability to provide physicians and the public with the information they need to support the health and mental health of every person seeking health care in the U.S. Further, it is critically important that federal health agency officials again be able to communicate freely with the public, as the ongoing communications freeze is exacerbating the challenges posed by removal of research, data and guidance pages from federal websites.”

“The recent announcement to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) will limit our ability to collaborate and coordinate on public health issues that impact individuals and their families here and around the globe. As leading medical organizations representing more than 600,000 physicians in the United States, we share the goal of safe, healthy and disease-free patients and communities. “For more than 70 years, the WHO has played a leading a role in protecting, supporting and promoting public health in the United States and around the world. Withdrawing from the WHO will hamper our country’s ability to predict and respond to major public health emergencies and limit access, communication and information sharing to a global network of health professionals.

“We urge Congress to reject the administration’s proposal to withdraw from the WHO and ensure the United States can continue to have a seat at the table where critical public health decisions are being made.”

CHICAGO—In recognition of nearly 200,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and medical students in the U.S., 20 states and cities across the nation are observing December 2024 as Osteopathic Medicine Month. This designation recognizes the 150th anniversary of osteopathic medicine, which applies a distinctive philosophy and approach to caring for patients in all areas of medicine, including primary care, surgery and specialty fields.

DOs are fully licensed physicians who are trained to provide comprehensive care with a focus on preventive medicine and whole-person wellness. DOs hold some of the most distinguished positions in medicine today, caring for the U.S. President, overseeing the NASA medical team and leading some of the nation’s top-ranked hospitals and health systems. The profession is one of the fastest-growing in health care, making up more than 10% of physicians and 28% of medical students in the U.S.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Joe Biden issued a congratulatory letter to the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, recognizing the osteopathic profession’s tremendous contributions to health care during the past 150 years. “As you celebrate this milestone anniversary, it is my hope that you are filled with pride in all the progress the osteopathic medical community has achieved—from pioneering medical discoveries to improving the health and well-being of Americans across the nation and so much more,” the letter states.

To date, 20 state and city leaders have issued proclamations declaring December 2024 as Osteopathic Medicine Month, including Alabama, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, and West Virginia. View the full listing of proclamations.

“This remarkable achievement not only honors the rich history of our profession but also highlights the profound role of osteopathic medicine in health care today,” said American Osteopathic Association President Teresa A. Hubka, DO, FACOOG (Dist). “Through patient-centered care and a commitment to understanding the root causes of illness, osteopathic physicians are shaping the future of medicine.”

CHICAGO—Teresa A. Hubka, DO, FACOOG (Dist.), FACOG, CS, was installed Saturday as the second female President in the history of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the nation’s premier osteopathic medical organization representing more than 197,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and medical students across the nation.

Dr. Hubka assumed the presidency before an estimated 900 osteopathic physicians, medical students and guests at the AOA’s Annual Business Meeting in Chicago. Her term in office coincides with the 150th anniversary of osteopathic medicine, a philosophy established in 1874 by a frontier physician seeking a more patient-centered approach to care. Today, the osteopathic medical profession accounts for more than 11% of all physicians and 25% of all medical students in the U.S.

“As osteopathic physicians, we bring a unique philosophy to the practice of medicine, treating the whole person rather than just symptoms,” said Dr. Hubka, an osteopathic OB-GYN who has practiced in Chicago for more than three decades. “Our distinctive approach is exactly what is needed in health care today.”

Dr. Hubka is dually board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG), Diplomat of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the AOA Mentor Hall of Fame.

As the founder and medical director of Comprehensive Wellness Care, LLC, in Chicago, Dr. Hubka specializes in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive health, providing complete health services for women of all ages. In addition, she serves as a clinical professor and department chair at Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.

During her AOA presidency, Dr. Hubka will focus on leading excellence in osteopathic distinction, solidarity and physician leadership. “Our unique approach enables us to provide our patients with the most comprehensive level of care found in medicine today. This is truly remarkable, especially in a health care landscape increasingly focused on patient-centered outcomes,” she said.

A graduate of the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Hubka completed an osteopathic internship at Atlantic City (New Jersey) Medical Center, followed by a residency in OB-GYN surgery at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center in Chicago, where she served as Administrative Chief Resident.

Dr. Hubka has been named by Chicago Magazine as a “top doctor” in women’s health care multiple times and is a recipient of the ACOOG Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the college.

Also during the AOA Annual Business Meeting, Robert G.G. Piccinini, DO, D.FACN, was named President-Elect of the AOA. Dr. Piccinini, an AOA board-certified osteopathic psychiatrist who practices in Macomb, Michigan, will begin his term as AOA President in July 2025.
